Understanding the 5 S's

This course is designed for supervisors and managers.

5S is a method for organizing a workplace, especially a shared workplace (like a shop floor or an office space), and keeping it organized. The key targets of 5S are improved workplace morale, safety and efficiency. The assertion of 5S is, by assigning everything (that is needed) a location, time is not wasted by looking for things. Additionally, it is quickly obvious when something is missing from its designated location.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • 5S as a philosophy
  • Benefits of 5S
  • Making 5S a habit

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define 5S and how the various disciplines (Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize and Sustain) are applied within a Lean environment
  • Conduct a 5S audit
  • Order items or activities in a manner to promote work flow
  • Evaluate the worth of the various practices and how they might be profitably applied to your business
