Building Interdepartmental Cooperation

This course is designed for supervisors and managers.

Many traditional organizations have difficulty creating the cooperation necessary for world-class performance. Departments within organizations often become so focused on the goals of their individual departments that they lose sight of the overall goal of the organization and become entrenched in, as the title of Peg Neuhauser's book so aptly puts it, Tribal Warfare in Organizations.

Participants who attend this interactive course will gain insight into organizational cooperation, and will be able and empowered to work respectfully with their upstream and downstream internal partners.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • How to use the concept of organizations as systems to build interdepartmental cooperation
  • Analyzing how the differing priorities within your system can prevent the organization from meeting its overall goals
  • The classic causes of interdepartmental conflict
  • How to have an interdepartmental cooperation conversation

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • See the workflow streams and be able to actively manage them
  • Analyze their team mission and state their explicit expectations of their internal organizational partners
  • Give clear and specific feedback to those internal partners
  • Accept and respond to feedback from all strategic partners
  • Develop a plan to address the areas of highest need and interest
  • Make a public commitment to their internal partners describing what they will do
