Supervising for the First Time
Are You a Newly Appointed Supervisor or About to be Promoted to the Position of Supervisor?

This course is designed for new supervisors.

Are you a newly appointed supervisor or about to be promoted to the position of supervisor?

Congratulations! You have earned a promotion to supervisor through your hard work and the leadership you have shown. Along with the exhilaration you may feel at being recognized for your talents, you may also discover that moving into the position of supervisor can be a stressful and intimidating transition. You have been given authority over your former peers. You are expected to change your focus from doing the work yourself to getting the work done through others-some of whom may be less than enthusiastic about you in your new role. You may even have to give up some of the job duties you enjoy most in favor of learning new ones which feel awkward at first.

This course will help alleviate some of the stress that accompanies this major career move by providing you with specific skills and strategies you can put to use right away.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • How "what got you promoted" both helps - and hinders you - in your new job
  • Supervisory skills and knowledge - an overview
  • Supervising friends and former peers
  • Communication skills practice: listening and delegation
  • Your first 90 days: success strategies

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • List and describe the three primary tasks of a supervisor
  • Apply their knowledge of the comfort zone when training employees
  • Assess their level of competence from a list of individual supervisory skills
  • Delegate any task using a 6-step process
  • Identify three success strategies they will use in their new job
  • Set performance expectations for anyone they supervise, including former peers
