Coaching Skills for Managers

This course is designed for supervisors and managers.

Most job descriptions for managers and supervisors include terms like "develop employee skills." But, without specific guidelines, many managers and supervisors procrastinate this process because they have little experience and are often unsure about how to accomplish this goal.

Coaching is a planned, structured one-on-one process between the manager/supervisor and the employee. Generally the purpose of coaching is to develop an employee for future organizational needs, or to help an employee overcome a gap in their technical, decision-making or interpersonal skills.

In this course, you will learn and practice everything you need to coach with confidence. You'll learn to do your prep work, you'll practice the talk track and you'll even manage employee resistance.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • The costs of failing to coach employees
  • How to analyze employee performance
  • Preparing for the coaching conversation
  • The one-on-one coaching process
  • Dealing with employee resistance

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess direct report competency and identify coaching needs for each person on their team
  • Describe the explicit expectation, the metrics and the employee's skill gap
  • Open the dialogue by scripting out and telling the employee that there is an issue which requires their attention and action
  • Guide the employee towards taking an active role in their performance improvement by using inquiry techniques to assist the employee in solving their own problem
  • Manage employee resistance and praise progress
