Communicating for Results

This program is designed for all employees.

"We have a communication problem here." While that phrase can mean almost anything, there are classic situations in the workplace where communications break down, and where specific skills are called for. Workplace communication for managers and supervisors has the additional challenge of needing to be warm enough to generate cooperation and loyalty, and clear enough to generate respect.

Since the purpose of communication is to get results, this course focuses on the six most common types of results needed at work.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Communicating information to get understanding - Providing specific information helps them get work done right, and is motivational
  • Communicating clear expectations and task assignments to get the job done right - Specific proven ways to assign tasks
  • Communicating responsibility to hold people accountable - Define and clarify authority and responsibility
  • Communicating correction or improvement required - They need to hear specifically what you want them to stop doing and what you want them to start doing
  • Communicating praise to get cooperation and loyalty - Still the #1 way to motivate
  • Communicating that you have listened and understood - Active listening skills

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze their own communication style and automatic default process
  • Develop a critical appreciation for "context" and how to set it up
  • Apply the Business Communications Model to the process of giving information to others
  • Delegate responsibility and authority with clarity
  • Invite dialogue and create forward moving discussion
  • Hold people accountable and have that difficult conversation
  • Praise and motivate each person uniquely
  • Listen to understand and then to respond
