Course Schedule

This course is designed for safety and environmental personnel that need the initial hazardous materials training required by the US DOT.

Regulation 49 CFR 172.700-704 requires that everyone participating in the transportation of hazardous materials be trained. The initial training is required within 90 days of hiring or reassignment. The Preamble of the regulations states that everyone involved needs training: those typing the paper work, packing the material, driving the truck, signing documents and authorizing the shipment.

Topics that will be covered include:

• General awareness training
• Function-specific training: each person who performs any function in proximity to a hazardous material, and each first line supervisor of that person, shall be provided training concerning safety information applicable to the hazardous material and their job function
• Overview of security requirements including Homeland Security requirements. These requirements address security plans and training on such plans

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the four tools required by the federal government to indicate the presence of hazardous materials (markings, labels, shipping papers and placards)
• Complete the basic shipping description for a hazardous material using the Hazardous Materials Table from 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
• Look up emergency response information for a hazardous material in the DOT Emergency Response Guide, 2008
• Identify the packaging authorizations for a hazardous materials shipment
• Explain the importance of shipping hazardous materials as limited quantity or consumer commodity
