The Family Medical and Leave Act (FMLA) was enacted in 1993 to provide job security to employees who require time off from work because of their own illness, or to care for infirm family members, or to care for newborn infants. It was Congress' stated goal to balance the needs of employees and their families against the legitimate interests of their employers. FMLA was amended in January and October 2009 adding among other things, job protected leave for employees with family members in the military.
