Archived Webcast (On Demand Course): Preventing Legal Risks Related to the Swine Flu (H1N1) and other Pandemic Flu's

The World Health Organization issued a statement on June 11, 2009, raising the pandemic warning level from phase 5 to 6 - its highest alert. This is the first global flu epidemic since 1968. Public health officials caution that a second wave of an influenza virus may be coming this fall when regular flu season commences. The United States continues under a declared "health emergency."

Prudent employers should have in place a plan addressing international travel, quarantines and employee rights in the areas of wage and hour, personal hygiene, medical privacy, disability and discrimination.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • May employers restrict employee travel?
  • May employers impose "quarantine" periods on employees who have travelled to infected areas?
  • When may an employer deduct pay or a leave bank for absences related to the swine flu?
  • What specific steps must an employer take to keep employees safe at work?
  • May employers require a medical release before an employee returns to work after showing flu symptoms?

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Compose a pandemic or medical emergency company policy addressing travel and appropriate pay practices for imposed quarantine
  • Integrate safety precautions unique to keeping the workplace safe from the spread of pandemic flu.
