Understanding Legal Issues for Supervisors

This course is designed for supervisors and managers.

Supervisors are not only responsible for ensuring efficient operation of their work groups within the bounds of company policies, they are agents of the company that are responsible for compliance with a wide range of complex laws and regulations. To help them do this, companies must both train supervisors on the law, and train them to know when to seek help.

This class is designed to assist supervisors in identifying situations in which statutory or contractual legal mandates or restrictions will affect their course of action and to determine whether assistance is required.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Discrimination in employment
  • Workplace harassment prevention
  • Discipline, discharge and layoffs
  • Common wage-hour violations
  • Unemployment compensation benefit issues
  • Overview of labor law for both union and non-unionized employers
  • Other state and federal laws that will affect decisions in managing employees

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify relevant areas of the law that may apply to the situation
  • Determine whether it is necessary to seek guidance or advice from his supervisor, a human resources professional or attorney
