Understanding Employer's Responsibilities in Managing Garnishments

This course is designed for human resource professionals.

Employers are required by law to comply with a writ of garnishment whether or not the employer agrees with the writ or is empathetic to the employee's financial situation. Failing to respond to the writ or to withhold appropriate amounts from the employee's paycheck may cause the employer to be liable for the whole garnishment amount, including attorney's fees and costs. Don't get caught in this dilemma!

This course targets key points of managing garnishments and offers strategy tips in dealing with garnishing creditors and your indebted employees. The session also includes information specific to child support orders. It's well worth your time!

Topics that will be covered include:

  • How to read and interpret the legal documents: a general writ, a writ for a continuing lien and answer forms
  • Identifying what is proper service in Washington State
  • Multiple garnishments served upon one employee: Responding appropriately and accurately withholding the necessary amounts
  • What happens when a child support order, including medical coverage enrollment, gets into the mix: dissecting a complex situation

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to properly complete an Answer to Writ of Garnishment
  • Prioritize multiple writs of garnishments, including child support orders and governmental liens
  • Communicate confidently with employees, garnishors and collection firms about garnishments and the employer's duties
